Pennsylvania window tint lawHow dark can you tint in Pennsylvania?

Pennsylvania counts how much light the film and glass let through. A higher number is lighter. The rules differ for cars and for SUVs, trucks and vans. Here is what that means for each window, in plain words.

  • The law is Pennsylvania’s Vehicle Code, 75 Pa.C.S. § 4524(e), and PennDOT’s equipment rules.
  • PennDOT can approve darker film for some medical conditions. Apply to PennDOT before you tint.
  • Factory tinted glass on SUVs, trucks and vans is legal as it came.

QuestionsPennsylvania tint law questions

Is 35% tint legal in Pennsylvania?

Not on a car. Cars need 70% on every window. On an SUV, truck or van, 35% is fine on the back side windows and rear glass.

Can I tint my windshield in Pennsylvania?

Only a strip across the top 3 inches.

Is my SUV a car or a multipurpose vehicle?

SUVs, pickups and vans are multipurpose vehicles in Pennsylvania, so their back side windows and rear glass can be any darkness.

What about a medical exemption?

PennDOT can approve darker film for some medical conditions. You apply to PennDOT before the film is fitted.
